Master of Science in Information Systems (MS)

Graduates of the Master of Science in Information Systems degree program will be prepared for a career in, or advancement within, a range of positions that manage information and technology in the digital organization. This program is designed for both professionals in the field and continuing students with an undergraduate degree in a computer or management information systems field. For other academic or professional training, some existing knowledge of computer information systems is recommended and a preparatory class is provided for those students. This program offers its students’ knowledge of the business and technical side of bringing organizations into the current age of technology. The core competencies of the program include data analysis and management, compliance and assurance, and emerging technologies as students learn to design, develop, deploy, and guide information systems solutions. All students will take the foundational courses that introduce students to the fundamentals of how information systems support business operations and how organizations can effectively and efficiently evaluate emerging technologies.

Throughout this program, students will have the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of skills in the areas of theoretical and applied computing as well as in managerial principles and practices to effectively solve a variety of real life problems in the digital organization. Students will also have the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to understand the roles of a technical team and the necessary components of effective planning and teamwork. One of the outcomes of this program includes having the ability to design, develop, analyze, and evaluate information infrastructure and systems solutions while considering compliance and assurance and emerging technologies.

Before graduation, each student will be required to demonstrate attainment of discipline specific knowledge and applications of management and operations skills through a Capstone course.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

  2. Students may communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, their understanding of and solutions for common technology problems.
  3. Students may demonstrate attainment of discipline-specific knowledge.
    1. Students may collect, analyze, manage, synthesize, and distribute meaningful information within a business environment.
    2. Students may adopt and implement new and emerging technologies.
    3. Students may demonstrate an understanding of professional, ethical, legal, security, and social issues and responsibilities, including compliance and assurance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
    4. Students may demonstrate an ability to conduct, evaluate, and synthesize research and apply theoretical concepts to practical settings.

Master of Science in Information Systems: 48 Credits


Foundation Information Systems and Technology: 8 Credits


Capstone: 4 Credits

Maryland residents are not eligible to enroll in an internship, externship, practicum, or field experience.  Students should work with their academic advisor or counselor to be sure they are making appropriate course choices.
